Advent Online - Caitlyn’s MEGA list of Advent resources

Experience Advent in your earbuds, on your phone, on social media, and online

The air is cooling, the nights are growing longer, the vestments in the worship space have turned blue – the season of Advent is upon us.

Advent practices often take a back seat to our Lenten fasts, thanks in no small part to the hustle and bustle of parties, decorating, and domestic preparations. It can be hard to slow down and devoutly read an Advent book, or piously pray the Daily Office, and fasting during Christmas Cookie Season is nearly out of the question.

Maybe you’re not a book person. Maybe you have a long commute. Or maybe you crave more this season.

Below you'll find Caitlyn’s MEGA list of ways you can experience Advent electronically, through your earbuds, on your cell phones, on your social media, and much more. God reached out to us in such an unlikely way – in baby boy born in a barn. God continues to reach out to us, meeting us where we are to call us to God's Love, even in our emails and Instagrams. Peruse the lists below to find what might be a place where God can reach out to you while waiting at your desk, in your car, or while you wait in line.

May you be blessed this Advent season as we celebrate Christ’s first coming and wait together in hope for his second coming.

Deacon Caitlyn

PODCASTS

This weekly podcast offers ways to engage with the Way of Love, The Episcopal Church's intentional commitment to practicing faith by following Jesus. Hear stories and get practical advice from Bishop Michael Curry and others who are putting the Way of Love practices (Turn, Learn, Pray, Worship, Bless, Go, Rest) into action.

The Most Rev. Michael Curry is Presiding Bishop of The Episcopal Church, and on this episode, we talk about love. Messy, hard, complicated love. I ask him how we can transcend fear in a scarcity-based culture and what we can learn from those who came before us.

A Brave Space with Dr. Meeks will support the work of the Absalom Jones Center for Racial Healing in its mission of creating brave space where the truth can be told. The sessions will explore various topics that address the intersections between slavery, lynching, the prison industrial complex, the death penalty and 21st-century police killings and the ways in which these issues prohibit racial healing in America.

Jenn Giles Kemper of www.sacredordinarydays.com & Lacy Clark Ellman of www.asacredjourney.net talk about Advent—the first season in the liturgical year—and share favorite themes and practices as they embrace the invitations of the season and prepare for Christmas.

The Living Church Foundation publishes The Living Church magazine (in continuous publication since 1878), the Covenant blog, and other Christian teaching resources. Our historic mission in the Episcopal Church and Anglican Communion is to seek and serve the Catholic and evangelical faith of the one Church, to the end of visible Christian unity throughout the world.

An hour to sit with, and be filled. Two voices - one from the last century, one from ours - who inspire inward contemplation as an essential part of meeting the challenges in the world. Howard Thurman's book Jesus and the Disinherited, it was said, was carried by Martin Luther King Jr.

Life isn't always bright and shiny, as Kate Bowler knows. Kate is a young mother, writer and professor who, at age 35, was suddenly diagnosed with Stage IV cancer. In, warm, insightful, often funny conversations, Kate talks with people about what they've learned in dark times.

Yale Divinity School Professor Teresa Berger discusses how digital media is fostering online faith communities and religious practice. She weighs in on the possibility of God working through Wi-Fi and whether social media should be required for church leaders in the twenty-first century.

Honest Advent

Awakening to the Wonder of God-With-Us Then, Here, and Now

For those who are looking for something honest, something real, something with a little more human grit to it and a little less conventional red and green: Honest Advent offers a new kind of devotional.

Advent

The Once & Future Coming of Jesus Christ

"Advent," says Fleming Rutledge, "is definitely not for sissies." As the midnight of the Christian year, Advent is rife with dark, gritty realities. In this book Rutledge spotlights the rich significance of the Advent season not just as transitional but as vibrant and profound in its own right.

Watch for the Light

Fifty devotions that invite you to contemplate the great themes of Christmas and the significance that the coming of Jesus has for each of us - not only during Advent, but every day. Whether dipped into at leisure or used on a daily basis, Watch for the Light gives the phrase "holiday preparations" new depth and meaning.

Haphazard by Starlight

A Poem A Day From Advent To Epiphany

Like the Magi who travelled a long distance to search out and adore the infant Jesus, and who took some wrong turns on the way, we too have a journey to undertake before we find that we have “Walked haphazard by starlight straight/Into the kingdom of heaven.”
